Wellington Park
Project Details
Location: Wellington Park – Hobart, TAS
Project Size: 23.7 ha
The Habitat Restoration Fund is helping Glenorchy City Council in the targeted removal of Spanish Heath (Erica lusitanica) and
Gorse (Ulex europaeus) within Wellington Park, Hobart, Tasmania. Both species are highly aggressive invasive weeds that threaten the park’s
native bushland, outcompeting indigenous understorey plants and degrading critical habitat for local wildlife.
Wellington Park spans over 18,000 hectares of the Wellington Range and serves as a vital ecological corridor connecting lowland and alpine
environments. Left unchecked, Spanish Heath and Gorse rapidly colonise disturbed areas, forming dense thickets that suppress native
regeneration, alter soil chemistry, and increase bushfire fuel loads.
This funding enables strategic herbicide treatment and manual removal across priority infestation zones, helping restore conditions for native
species to re-establish naturally. The project supports Glenorchy City Council’s broader weed management strategy and contributes to the
long-term ecological health of one of southern Tasmania’s most significant natural reserves.
